Driveway resurfacing on the Central Coast.
A worn, stained or dated concrete driveway does not always need ripping out. A bonded decorative overlay gives you a fresh, sealed surface for a fraction of replacement cost, built to handle Central Coast salt air and storm rain.
Resurface or replace?
Most tired Central Coast driveways are surface-worn, not structurally failed. The slab underneath a faded, oil-stained or cracked-at-the-surface driveway in Gosford or Erina is usually still sound. In that case a resurfacing overlay, a thin bonded decorative layer over the existing concrete, transforms it without the cost, mess and council fuss of a full demolition and re-pour. We are upfront at the measure: if the slab is heaved, drummy or cracked through from reactive-soil movement, we will tell you replacement is the right call rather than sell you an overlay that will telegraph the failure within a year.
Overlay systems we use.
- Spray-on (spray pave): a polymer-modified cement sprayed in a texture coat, slip-resistant, huge colour range, the Central Coast favourite for driveways. ~$45 to $70/m².
- Stencil overlay: a pattern stencil laid before the topping for a brick, paver or tile look. ~$50 to $75/m².
- Trowel-on topping: a smooth render-like microtopping for a modern flat finish. ~$60 to $85/m².
- Stamped overlay: stamped to mimic stone, slate or timber. ~$65 to $90/m².
Coastal prep and sealing matter most.
An overlay is only as good as its bond to the slab and the seal on top. In salt air, a poorly bonded or unsealed overlay lifts and stains fast. We grind or acid-etch the slab, repair cracks, apply a bonding primer, lay the overlay, then finish with a UV-stable coastal-grade sealer, often with an anti-slip additive to meet AS 3661 on sloped Terrigal and Avoca driveways. Reseal every 3 to 4 years and a resurfaced driveway lasts 10 to 15 years here.
A worked example.
A 55m² faded, oil-marked plain-concrete driveway in Erina that the owner thought needed replacing: crack repair, grind and prime, a sandstone spray-on overlay, then a sealed slip-resistant finish. Around $2,800 to $3,800 and three days on site, versus $9,000-plus and three weeks for demolition and re-pour. The driveway looks brand new and the bond is rated for the next decade.

Once an overlay is down we always finish it with concrete sealing. If your existing slab is actually fine and just needs protecting, sealing alone may be enough, the choosing a sealer guide helps you decide. For sloped or shaded resurfaced driveways, see anti-slip coatings.
