Concrete driveway sealing on the Central Coast.
The right sealer keeps a concrete driveway looking new and stops the salt, oil and UV damage that ages a Central Coast slab fast. We seal plain, coloured and stencilled concrete with products matched to how close you are to the water.
Why concrete driveways fail early on the Coast.
A bare concrete driveway in Gosford or Terrigal is exposed to three things at once that a driveway in western Sydney never sees together: constant salt-laden air, harsh coastal UV, and sudden heavy storm rain off the Tasman. Salt chlorides creep into unsealed concrete and trigger surface scaling and reinforcement corrosion. UV bleaches colour out of oxide and stencilled finishes. Storm water sits in micro-cracks and works them wider. Sealing addresses all three by keeping water, salt and stains out of the slab surface.
Penetrating versus film-forming sealers.
We carry both and recommend honestly based on your slab and location:
- Penetrating silane/siloxane: soaks into the concrete, invisible finish, will not peel under UV, excellent for exposed beachside driveways. Around $6 to $11/m². Reseal every 3 to 5 years.
- Acrylic film-forming: wet-look sheen, enhances colour on coloured and stencilled concrete, economical. Around $12 to $18/m². Recoat every 2 to 3 years in salt air.
- Polyurethane high-build: tough, high-gloss, longer-wearing decorative coat. Around $16 to $22/m². Best paired with a slip additive on coastal driveways.
A worked example.
A common job for us is a 65m² coloured-concrete driveway in Erina that has gone chalky and faded. Pressure clean and degrease, treat two oil spots, then two coats of a UV-stable acrylic with a slip additive. Total around $1,100 to $1,500 including prep, finished in a day, drive on it the next. The owner gets the original charcoal colour back and three to four years before the next light recoat. Compare that to the $8,000-plus cost of replacing a scaled, faded slab and the maths is easy.
Australian Standards and prep.
We prep to AS 3958-style guidance for surface preparation, and where a decorative gloss could become slippery we add an aggregate slip additive to meet AS 3661 anti-slip ratings. Good prep, pressure cleaning, degreasing, crack treatment and a fully dry slab, is 70% of why a seal lasts. The cheap operators skip it, then the coat blushes white or peels within a season.
